The neon and fluorescent colors have made a comeback in the fashion scene as evident from their takeover of New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. It seems that designers have finally embraced neon.
‘History repeats itself’ or so the saying goes. It has proven true for the fashion industry time and again and Spring 2019 is going to be no different. To our surprise, it’s the famous neon and fluorescent colors that are making a big comeback.
Neon and fluorescent colors were a cornerstone of fashion from the 80s and 90s. These colors were at the height of their popularity as every brand was coming up with neon-inspired looks. The same looks seem to be making their return, as hues of neon, yellow-green, orange and pink made their mark during New York Fashion Week Spring 2019 and the latest collection from London’s House of Holland. Needless to say, these bright fluorescent colors have evoked fun and liveliness among fashionistas.
This season’s collections have shown that neon clothing has graduated from being relegated to street wear and athletic wear, and properly entered mainstream high fashion. Designers are now incorporating bright neon colors on everything that is on the shelves. From gowns, dresses, tops, ruched dresses to high heels and leather bags, neon has taken the fashion industry by a storm. It’s also not wrong to say that it is going to survive the wrath of critics.
Neon’s comeback in Spring 2018 can be tracked by simple observing the many celebrities who were seen making appearances at events, draped in the colorful fluorescent shades. Trendsetting artists like Rihanna have embraced this trend as apparent from the new offerings in her Fenty x Puma line. Every item in the new collection featured a fluorescent accent.
Marc Jacobs was also seen indulging in the trend while paying homage to 80s most distinct looks. His 80s style, outsized power suits included a neon orange number. Completing the ensemble was a neon pink fanny pack; probably the most 80s thing we’ve ever seen. Other big names that embraced the neon tide on the runway were Delpozo, Carolina Herrera, Christian Siriano, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, and Prabal Gurung.
Prabal Gurung’s catwalk show was a highlight of New York Fashion Week with regards to neon colors. The designer’s new collection was a celebration of fluorescence; models showcased the new collection, featuring dresses in neon yellows, blues, orange, pinks and greens. His collection demonstrated how to ditch the neutral palette and opt for a head-to-toe neon look.
Prada was also one of the big names that acknowledged the neon comeback. Prada’ designs even extended the neon to the scarf collars. Other big names like Sonia Rykiel, Tom Ford, Moschino, and Balmain also incorporated neon colors in their showings.
The retina-burning yellow, green and pink hues aren’t just making waves at fashion shows. The trend has also been adopted by the people in the streets. You can see brands like Nike upping their neon offerings. When in doubt, just pair up your utility pants, featuring neon-accented trim, with a neon-shaded crop top. These colors will go together and you can never go wrong with this look.
Neon fashions have made quite a splash this year and the looks inspired by it will continue to make an impact during fall. Neon will soon take over the fashion scene and we are going to witness a neon renaissance. New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week have demonstrated how the fluorescent shades are here to stay, for at least next year. It’s time you bring back neon to your wardrobe as well as your gym clothes.
